We're a working goat farm located halfway between Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA. The Boer and Kiko breeds are the foundation of our herd. Our goal is maximizing the average daily weight gain of our goats kids naturally, with no creep feeding nor unnecessary supplements. Aggressive culling of our herd is a key to our success relying on the genetic foundation of the animal, rather than medications and artificial supplements.

In pursuit of that goal, we use no chemical fertilizers, animal hormones or pesticides of any kind in production of pastured broilers and laying hens, salad bar beef, turkeys, pigs and garden vegetables. Customers may order fresh beef, pork, chicken and turkey, seasonally, or stop by the farm year-round for frozen goods, baked items, and other family-produced wares. We welcome visitors to the farm, and can arrange tours in advance. No Sunday calls or visits, please.  We want to provide what our customers can't get anywhere else, namely locally-produced food that's fit to eat and that supports the rejuvenation and continuation of the family farm for the generations to come.

A small family farm which prides itself on producing the best possible pasture-raised beef, lamb, pork, poultry, potatoes, cornmeal and wheat berries.
During the growing season our beef and sheep are rotated to fresh paddocks daily. The laying hens are moved every other day and are free to roam, scratch and peck. The pastured broilers are raised May through October in portable huts that are also moved daily to fresh, clean pasture.  However, because of our small size, supplies may be limited. The Sharon Rose Farm is located just five miles off I-85 and eight miles off I-26 in the Upstate of South Carolina so we're easy to find.

Windy Hill Farm

329 Hamby Street
Pelzer, SC 29669

Judy Langley
864 430 2265

Windy Hill Farm is located in the Piedmont Region of South Carolina. Here on the farm, we grow grass-fed Black Angus, meat goats and show quality, breeding goats. Along side the pastures you will find small plots of heritage vegetables, cut flowers, blueberries, and various plants and shrubs for sale.

Guineas, chickens and turkeys are grown here too. Guineas are quite interesting, and are loads of fun to watch. They become quite nosey and are very vocal when something or someone has entered... we refer to our flock as the "Windy Hill Posse". They feed on insects and seeds. Many farmers claim they eliminate ticks too. I must confess, we haven't seen a tick since they arrived and our fireant population has dwindled by 75%.

News

We are all frustrated and horrified by the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. In the last FOOD CHAIN, Slow Food USA  offered a few avenues for giving support both financial and otherwise.

•Donate: Oxfam, Gulf Aid, Gulf Coast Fund and the Gulf Restoration Network

•Volunteer: Sierra Club is hosting clean-ups

Upstate Locally Grown

www.upstatesc.locallygrown.net

Need a volunteer support staff; people to pack and transport the orders to different drop-off sites.

Slow Food Upstate is featured on One Cause, a web site that allows you to shop on line and your selected merchants will contribute a percentage of the sale to Slow Food Upstate.  Go to www.onecause.com and become a member, then select Slow Food Upstate as your Cause to support.  Add the One Cause browser tab to your computer and select your merchants through the One Cause web site.  One Cause will then send Slow Food Upstate the contributions.  You must however, access the merchant through the One Cause web site to participate.

These contributions will help further the Slow Food Upstate missions in our area.

The South Carolina General Assembly will be voting on a bill that would create the ability for farms to have signs posted.  This would aid farmers in SC very much, so please voice your opinion to your State Representative.
